This bronze statuette depicts a king of Dynasty 18 (possibly Amenhotep II) as God Amun-Re of Thebes. He is portrayed as an athletic warrior striding, which denotes that he was ruling Egypt at the time the statuette was ordered. He wears the crown typical of Amun-Re (with two tall feathers and a solar disk), a large four-row collar, armlets and bracelets.

The general style of this statuette is indicative of Dynasty 18 (1570-1298 BC) when, along with his home city of Thebes, the god Amun rose in importance to become the ‘king of gods’. But we will never be certain which king of that dynasty is portrayed here. The original dedication runs counterclockwise from the front of the pedestal: Im n shnt ank di n ... wdat mm. . . hb-sd ank. . . rwd nb pr rmi ank f nb (“Amen, the support of heaven, may the life cause to . . . the sound eye of Horus, among. . . ”) until the word hb-sd meaning “jubilee,” below the right leg. Just where the name of the king would have appeared, the original hieroglyphs are superseded by a later, sloppy engraving which is not readily understandable.

Khalil (1976:[2]225-237) hypothesized that this usurpation may have been done during the time of the High Priests/Kings of Thebes, because they had both full authority in Thebes, and access to stores of existing cultic equipment which they reused for their own purposes, as Pinedjem did in a grand fashion. “In the temple of Karnak, Pinedjem I appears. . . and his name is on a number of scattered blocks. His major usurpation was to add his name to the colossal standing statue of Ramesses II” (Clayton 1994:176).
